Bindi Vora

Bindi Vora is an interdisciplinary photographic artist of Kenyan-Indian heritage, associate lecturer at London College of Communication and curator at Autograph a London-based non-profit arts charity that explores issues of identity, representation, human rights and social justice through photography.

 

Since joining Autograph, she has curated Mónica Alcázar-Duarte: Digital Clouds Don’t Carry Rain (2024), Hélène Amouzou: Voyages (2023) Eric Gyamfi: Fixing Shadows – Julius and I (2023), Poulomi Basu: Fireflies (2022), co-curated Ajamu: The Patron Saint of Darkrooms (2023), Sasha Huber: You Name It (2022) Care I Contagion I Community ­– Self & Other (2021-2022); Lola Flash: [sur]passing and Maxine Walker: Untitled (both 2019) and contributed to a series of in-conversations with multidisciplinary artists including Syowia Kyambi, Mónica Alcázar-Duarte, Maryam Wahid, Tobi Alexandra Falade, David Uzochukwu amongst others. Her writing has appeared in Another Country: British Documentary Photography Since 1945 (Thames & Hudson); FOAM Magazine and British Journal of Photography, participating in public programmes for Tate, Paul Mellon Centre, The Photographers’ Gallery amongst others.

 

As an artist she has been commissioned by the Hospital Rooms an arts and mental health charity to create new artworks for Devon Partnership NHS Foundation (2019) and Southwest London and St George’s Mental Health Trust (2023). In 2023 she published her first photobook Mountain of Salt which was subsequently shortlisted for the ‘Aperture Foundation x Paris Photo First Book Award’ 2023. Her works are part of collections including the MoMA Artist Book Collection (US); Guy’s and St Thomas Foundation (UK); Imperial Health Charity (UK), SPBH at Maison Européene de la Photographie (FR); The Women’s Art Library (UK) amongst others. She is currently the artist-in-residence at the National Museum Northern Ireland led by the Decolonising Arts Institute. She lives and works in London.

Overarching praxis statement :

Bindi Vora is an interdisciplinary photographic artist of Kenyan-Indian heritage, associate lecturer at London College of Communication and curator at Autograph a London-based non-profit arts charity that explores issues of identity, representation, human rights and social justice through photography.

Current art and/or research interest :

Currently my research is concerned with practices that articulate thoughts of care and the repercussions of this entangled word in a world that is so closely tied to subjective experiences.

 

This can be seen within several recent works including Mountain of Salt, 2020-21 an expansive series of 371 collages conceived as an action to respond to the triggering forms of language and signs – equality, hyper vigilance, Brexit, pledges of reform and prolonged moments of stillness, as well as her ongoing research project  I Dreamt of Lost Vocabularies (2023-ongoing), exploring her families entangled migratory journey – from their exile in Uganda, to their lives across continents – India, Kenya and the UK.
