Zeerak Ahmed: New album release TALISMAN
Congratulations to alum Zeerak Ahmed whose new album TALISMAN came out on 19th May 2023
US-based Pakistani artist and singer/songwriter, Zeerak Ahmed—who performs under the name Slowspin—releases her first full-length, collaborative album titled, TALISMAN.
Recorded and produced with a stellar lineup of New York-based musicians, including executive producer Shahzad Ismaily and co-producer Grey Mcmurray, Slowspin delivers a balm for the migrant's journey into the unknown: the abyss of love, loss and longing.
Beyond boundaries and/or genres, the album is a unique blend of North Indian classical vocal traditions, lush textures akin to shoegaze, psychedelic-rock, folk, ambient and experimental music; collectively it composes the spatial richness and complexity of the contemporary South Asian voice.
"The TALISMAN or طلسم holds the telos. It's an amulet for the journey into the unknown, a balm for the pilgrim traversing the abyss of love, loss and longing" Zeerak
About the artist:
Zeerak Ahmed / SLOWSPIN is a US-based Pakistani artist. Through sound, she explores notions of identity, memory and longing. Along with voice-based sculptures and meditative installations, she produces music that composes uniquely fragile sound collages. SLOWSPIN has a distinct sound practice grounded in Hindustaani classical vocal traditions, folk, electronic, ambient and experimental music.
She is presently archiving the sonic and intellectual histories of female folk music traditions from South Asia, drawing new visual forms from the poetic and melodic content of her ancestral body of sound. Exploring new ways of listening, composing, and performing the sounding body, her work addresses critical immaterial art.
